main character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, a story written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll (1832–1898) about a little
girl named Alice who falls down a well into a strange country where very illogical things happen. She has a
series of remarkable adventures with several characters, such as the Queen of
Hearts. At one
point, the Queen says, "Now, here, you see, it takes all the
running you can do, to keep in the same
place. If you
want to get somewhere else, you must
run at least twice as
fast as that!"
