time; each of their records sold over a million copies. A few months before this lecture (August 1966), one of the
Beatles made a
statement to the
press that the
Beatles were more popular than Jesus
Christ. At that
time, a number of radio and television
stations banned the
Beatles' records in the USA and other countries. Some even proposed bonfires where listeners might incinerate Beatle disks, books and memorabilia.
