(slang) gambling. In America, more than a hundred years ago, the
game of faro (a gambling
game in which players
bet on the cards to b e turned up from the top of the
dealer's
pack) was known as
tiger. To
buck the
tiger was to
play against the
bank; hence, to gamble.
