Dutch spelling of the
Zulu name Dingane, (d. 1840), the name of a
Zulu chieftain. In 1837, he permitted a
group of
Dutch to settle in
Natal (a
province of
South Africa) and then massacred them. The victory the next year by which the
death of the
Dutch settlers was avenged is annually commemorated in
South Africa on 16 December as Dingaan's
Day.
