Louis XVI (1754–1793),
king of
France 1791 - 1792. He was weak in
character and had little
understanding or caring for the
business of a
king; he spent the greater part of his
time hunting. Just prior to his being deprived of his powers, the royal palace was stormed by an organized mob and the Swiss Guard was massacred (August 1792). He was the last
king of
France and was executed January 1793.
