a radioactive form of carbon which is used as a tracer in chemical and biochemical research. Also, because of its presence in all carbon-containing matter, carbon 14 provides a means of dating archaeological specimens, fossils, etc., by measuring the amount of radioactive carbon 14 remaining in them.
