of Charles Robert Darwin (1809 - 1882), English naturalist and author who originated the theory of evolution by natural selection. This theory holds that all species of plants and animals developed from earlier forms by hereditary transmission of slight variations in successive generations, and that the forms which survive are those that are best adapted to the environment.
