The Allies won the battle.a coastal village approximately sixty miles (96.5 km) west of Alexandria, Egypt and the site of a decisive Allied victory during World War II (1939-1945). The turning point of the war in North Africa occurred in the battle of El Alamein on November 4, 1942, when numerically superior British forces, led by General Bernard L. Montgomery (1887-1976) defeated the German forces of General Erwin Rommel (1891-1944) driving them back 1,300 miles (2,092 km) across the desert into the neighboring nation of Tunisia and taking some 30,000 prisoners of war.
