a 1948 black and white western movie, directed by
Hollywood director John Ford (1895-1973). The movie
centers around
Lieutenant Colonel Thursday, a bigoted United
States Army
officer who arrives at the frontier
outpost, Fort
Apache,
Arizona, USA. Thursday considers his assignment to Fort
Apache an exile and beneath his abilities, believing he should be off fighting "serious"
Indians and ignores the warnings from
Captain York, his frontier-
wise assistant, that he should not underestimate the
Apache warriors.
Thinking the
Indians have fled he
leads the men of the
fort into a massacre where, after realizing his
folly, he and many of his men are killed.
Captain York survives and subsequently becomes the head of the
regiment.
