reference to the Third Reich, the name given by the Nazis to their government in Germany; Reich is German for "empire." Adolf Hitler believed that he was creating a third German empire, a successor to the Holy Roman Empire (a Germanic empire of central European states which lasted from the ninth century until 1806) and the German empire formed in 1871 that ended after Germany's defeat in World War I (1914 - 1918).
