a method of typesetting in which one line of type is cast in one piece from molten lead. Hence its name (and pronunciation), line-o'- type. Developed in the 1880s, it has been generally used for newspapers and periodical publications and quite extensively for books until the arrival of photographic and electronic systems in the mid-1970s.
