a twelve-year-old orphan girl who was the main character of Little Orphan Annie, a comic strip by Harold Gray. Annie was described by Gray as having "a heart of gold, but a wicked left." She had a faithful dog named Sandy and a guardian named Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks who was a billionaire capitalist and defender of free enterprise, rugged individualism and the Puritan ethic. In n o sense comic, Little Orphan Annie was a deadly serious work on the constant threats to the American way of life posed by subversive elements ranging from simple crooks to blind liberals to wily Communists.
