a
nursery tale in which a little
girl bringing a present to her grandmother is devoured by a
wolf who has disguised himself in the
old lady's ruffled nightcap. The brothers Grimm (two
German authors of the early nineteenth century, remembered mostly for their
collection of fairy tales) added a happy ending to the tale: a huntsman slits
open the
wolf and restores the child and her grandmother to
life.
