short for the Marconi Telegraph Company, founded in 1897 by Guglielmo Marconi (1874 - 1937), an Italian inventor and electrical engineer. Marconi's most famous invention is the wireless telegraph, the forerunner of present-day radio, which he developed in the 1890s.
