MESMERISM

the doctrine or system developed by Franz Mesmer according to which a hypnotic state, usually accompanied by insensibility to pain and muscular rigidity, can be induced by a n influence (at first known as "animal magnetism") exercised by a n operator over the will and nervous system of the patient. mesmerism is no relation to hypnotism at all. Mesmerism is animal magnetism. It's a physiological rapport, not a concentration on mental but on mental-physiological. (BTB 7 Apr 72R)
