originally a form of Anglo-Chinese jargon which developed on the China coast from the 17th century as a consequence of contact with English traders and businessmen. It is essentially a form of basic English with some Chinese and additions from other languages, but with certain Chinese constructions and a characteristic Chinese pronunciation.
