short for Preparatory check, a procedure originally developed in early 1962 as a way of cleaning up a case in order to run 3D Criss Cross. Its purpose was to get around an auditor's difficulty in "varying the question" in pulling withholds (later referred to a s Prepchecking by the Withhold System).
