reference to a fresco
painted by Raphael Sanzio (1483–1520) in
Rome,
Italy. Raphael was one of the greatest painters and architects of the
Italian Renaissance and was often called the "Divine Raphael" and the "Prince of Italian
Painting." In
Rome, he worked on papal
commissions and also for the cardinals, the princes and merchants; the most important of these
private patrons was a banker for whom Raphael
painted 12 paintings decorating
wall and
ceiling of the villa now known as the Farnesina. This included the
Legend of Cupid and
Psyche (1517 - 1518, unfinished) executed mainly by his pupils under his guidance.
