Africa where he became known as the "Desert

."
Rommel
had attained the
rank
of
field
marshal but was defeated by the British at
Tobruk
(city in
northern
Libya
) in 1942. In July 1944, he was implicated in a
plot
to assassinate the
German
leader
, Adolf
Hitler
. On
Hitler
's orders, he killed himself.
