the maincharacter in the tale "Sinbad the Sailor" from the Arabian Nights (a famous collection of Persian, Indian and Arabian folk tales). Sinbad, a rich young man of Baghdad, having wasted much of his wealth in reckless, wasteful living, undertakes a number of sea voyages as a merchant and meets with various marvelous adventures.
