Tomas
de Torquemada (1420–1498), first Grand Inquisitor of Spain in the
late fifteenth century. He was known for his
severity, especially with persons who were
charged with illegally practicing
Judaism. An estimated 2000 people were executed while he was in
charge of the
Inquisition.
