John T. Scopes (1901–1970), a US high-
school teacher, for violating the Tennessee
law prohibiting the teaching of the
Darwinian theory of
evolution in the
schools. The trial was reported
worldwide. Scopes was found guilty, but later acquitted on a technicality.
