the collective designation of the ancient sacred literature of India or of the individual books belonging to that literature. The principle examples of this voluminous religious collection, the whole of which comprises more than one hundred books, are the Rig-Veda, the Yajur-Veda, the Sama-Veda and the Atharva-Veda.
