VICKSBURG, SIEGE OF
VICKSBURG, SIEGE OF

battles of the
American Civil War
from 14 May 1863 - 4 July 1863. Vicksburg is a large
port
on the
Mississippi River
in the
state
of
Mississippi
. In April 1863,
Union
gunboats and supply ships ran
past
the
Confederate
gun
batteries
in the
dead
of night and established a
base
on the river
below
the city. Vicksburg was attacked and held under
siege
until 4 July, when the city surrendered. As it was the
last
great
Confederate
stronghold on the
Mississippi River
, the
Siege
of Vicksburg was a
major
victory for the
Union
.
