VICKSBURG, SIEGE OF
ScnMaster
one of the principal battles of the American Civil War from 14 May 1863 - 4 July 1863. Vicksburg is a large port on the Mississippi River in the state of Mississippi. In April 1863, Union gunboats and supply ships ran past the Confederate gun batteries in the dead of night and established a base on the river below the city. Vicksburg was attacked and held under siege until 4 July, when the city surrendered. As it was the last great Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, the Siege of Vicksburg was a major victory for the Union.
